Special Addendum on Holistic and Integrative Medicine: My interest in these areas began back in medical school when I found that while the hard sciences based approach was very effective for very sick patients, in the outpatient setting, often times a kinder, gentler approach could help the patients equally well, and often times with less side effects. In residency, I spent part of my time at the Mecca of Holistic and Integrative Medicine, the University of Arizona, with Andrew Weil, M.D., and therein a view of the whole person, as an integrated body, mind and spirit was solidified and I haven’t looked back since. Today, I believe that it’s essential that a physician be able to recognize when a person is sick and needs strong medicine, but equally important is the physician’s ability to recognize when a holistic, or integrated, bio-psycho-social approach is indicated, and to partner with patients to create personalized healing pathways, while always maintaining the highest levels of respect for the patient, and their ultimate right to choose how they wish to live.
